Why We Spay and Neuter the Pets We Sell

Hibou Cats accepts responsibility for every kitten that results from our breeding program. Therefore, we have decided that the pet kittens we sell will go to their new homes already spayed and neutered.

With early spaying and neutering, the kittens are over the surgery in less time and with fewer side effects. The worry and the expense that surgery for an older animal can cause are eliminated. The kitten you take home will be concentrating on its relationship with you and your family and will develop into the companion that you want.

Portrait of Hibou Tamarak

Hibou Tamarak (a.k.a. Loyal Cat), pictured above, was born July 12, 1996 and lives with us. He was neutered at 12 weeks of age and now weighs in at approximately 15 pounds. He never fails to impress visitors with his size and luxurious coat.

It is not unkind to have the female fixed before she has kittens - it keeps her welcome and loved in your home. Medical problems like uterine infections, ovarian cysts, mammary cancer and tumors may occur with a queen who has cycled and called endlessly. It also keeps your home free from the visits of wandering toms coming to call on your "lady in waiting".

Your male problem is more obvious if he is not neutered and he starts to spray. Your nose will tell you that first his litterpan, and then the rest of the house, will smell very strong and offensive. He will be less friendly, go around the house calling, and be more aggressive. Neutering will make your boy less inclined to dash out the door looking for his own true love.

It is not fair to use your pets as educational tools to teach children where babies come from; there are many good books and movies that will do a much better job. Better to teach them the art of responsible pet ownership, including scooping the pans, checking that fresh water and food are available and perhaps supervising the cat outdoors on a leash.
