About Hibou Cats
Hibou Cats was registered with CFA in August, 1976 by Marg and Neil Baird. Our first purebred cat, a wedding present to each other, was Kytu Penny Farthing of Hibou, a ruddy Abyssinian female co-bred by Norman Auspitz and Barbara Miller. Penny, along with a domestic shorthair named Panda (black and white, what else!), made the first years of our marriage both fun and interesting. Hibou grew by leaps and bounds. After breeding Abyssinians for over 10 years, we became interested in Somalis and, with thanks to Phil and Carolyn Marriner, Sheila Bowers and Joy Allen, had a wonderful time with these longhaired versions of our red and ruddy imps.
Slowly, the Maine Coons took over our home and hearts. We now exclusively breed Maine Coons and have done so since 1989. Our cats are registered with the Cat Fanciers' Association, Inc. and we show only CFA. Hibou is the French word for owl (everything sounds so much more sophisticated in French) and was inspired by the Edward Lear poem, The Owl and the Pussycat.
